While the characters are described as “horrific” and “terrible,” Zendaya finds the role change refreshing and exciting.
Villainous Fun in “Challengers”
Zendaya, talking about her character, mentioned, “There’s a villain-esque quality there to all of the characters. And I think that was fun.” Her co-star, Josh O’Connor, also chimed in, describing their roles as complex, leaving viewers to debate who the real antagonist is. The shifting perspectives allow audiences to see the characters in a more human light, despite their messy and complicated decisions.
The Storyline of “Challengers”
“Challengers,” directed by Luca Guadagnino and scripted by Justin Kuritzkes, revolves around a Grand Slam tennis champion who enters a challenger competition. Here, he competes against his wife’s (Zendaya) former lover and ex-coach, sparking a tense and intriguing narrative.

The filming took place in locations like Back Bay and East Boston, with cinematography managed by Sayombhu Mukdeeprom and costume design by Jonathan Anderson. The movie wrapped up in June 2022.
“Challengers” in Post-Production and Release Date Change
Post-production for “Challengers” required director Luca Guadagnino to collaborate with Zendaya on the set of “Dune: Part Two” for additional dialogue recording. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross composed the film’s score. The release date, initially scheduled for September 15, 2023, was rescheduled to April 26, 2024, due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Interestingly, the film will skip theaters in France and head to Amazon Prime Video for streaming.

Zendaya is also set to reprise her role as Chani in “Dune: Part Two.” In the first part of the series, Chani’s role mainly appeared in dreams before her introduction at the end of the movie. Zendaya promises a more substantial portrayal in the upcoming installment, as her character’s relationship with Paul (Timothée Chalamet) deepens. However, their relationship will face challenges with the introduction of Princess Irulan, played by Florence Pugh.
“Dune: Part Two” and the Expanding Storyline
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, “Dune: Part Two” continues the narrative based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel. The story follows Paul Atreides and the Fremen as they strive to triumph over House Harkonnen on the desert planet Arrakis. The cast includes both returning actors and newcomers, creating a dynamic ensemble.
