Life in the abyss is a harsh reality for these deep-sea cephalopods. Dumbo octopuses have had to shed many of their relatives’ adaptations to thrive in the pitch-black emptiness. They’ve lost their ink sacs for escape and the dazzling skin that once aided communication and camouflage. Now, they haunt the abyss with semi-translucent bodies, and the females carry clutches of eggs in case they happen upon a male in this desolate expanse.
An Unseen World
Fortunately, or unfortunately, human encounters with Dumbo octopuses are rare, thanks to their remote habitat. They remain mostly untouched by human activity, except for occasional captures in deep-sea fishing nets, which can be devastating.

During a live-streamed expedition known as Ala ʻAumoana Kai Uli (NA154), focused on exploring the biology and geology of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument near Hawaii, the scientists aboard the E/V Nautilus celebrated their unique encounter with a Dumbo octopus. This find came after a rather morbid encounter with a fellow cephalopod being devoured.

While much of this marine region remains uncharted, the expedition also seeks to uncover the sunken remains of ships from the Battle of Midway, resting on the seafloor. Locating these historical artifacts will add yet another layer to the researchers’ already impressive list of tasks.
