Starring Dulquer Salmaan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Dancing Rose Shabeer, Prasanna, Nyla Usha, Anika Surendran, Chemban Vinod, Gokul Suresh, Shanthi Krishna, the film “King of Kotha” directed by Abhilash Joshiy and produced by Wayfarer Films & Zee Studios, has hit the screens. Let’s dive into the review.
The Plot:
Khanna Bhai (Dancing Rose Shabeer) is a drug lord ruling Kotha town. C.I. Shahul Haasan (Prasanna) aims to dismantle the drug mafia, but struggles. Shahul discovers that Raju (Dulquer Salmaan) once controlled Kotha and Khanna Bhai was his ally. However, Raju and Khanna Bhai parted ways due to unknown reasons. What led to their separation? And what role does C.I. Shahul Haasan play? These questions form the core of the story.
Highlights:
Dulquer Salmaan’s performance is the film’s highlight. He brilliantly portrays Raju, an anti-drug crusader. His action scenes are notable. Dancing Rose (Shabeer Kallarakkal) convincingly portrays a gangster. Chemban Vinod’s English dialogue delivery adds humor. Jakes Bejoy’s background score enriches the film’s atmosphere.
Drawbacks:
The story isn’t what you’d expect from a Dulquer Salmaan film. It’s a typical gangster tale, lacking uniqueness. Dulquer and Dancing Rose’s efforts are hindered by the weak plot. The pacing is sluggish, demanding patience. Editing falls short, with unnecessarily long scenes. Predictability and stretched climax detract from the experience.
Other characters lack impact, except for Dulquer, Dancing Rose, and Chemban Vinod. While the film’s production values are decent, the writing needed more attention.
Technical Aspects:
The music, though passable, doesn’t stand out. Jakes Bejoy’s background score excels. The period setting is well recreated by the art team. Nimish Ravi’s cinematography is commendable. Production values meet expectations. Unfortunately, Abhilash Joshiy’s direction fails to elevate the routine story. The prolonged runtime needed trimming.
Verdict:
“King of Kotha” is a lengthy, unexciting gangster drama. Dulquer Salmaan impresses, supported by Dancing Rose. Yet, the mundane plot and slow pacing are major setbacks. Despite strong acting, the film disappoints.
