India Asks Canada to Withdraw Dozens of Diplomats

In a recent development, the Indian government has requested that Canada recall approximately 40 of its diplomats by October 10. This move comes amidst a strained diplomatic relationship between the two countries, stemming from a contentious issue involving the alleged involvement of the Indian government in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Trudeau’s Allegations

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had raised eyebrows when he insinuated that Indian authorities might be linked to Nijjar’s murder. Nijjar, a designated terrorist in India, was fatally shot outside a Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18.

Trudeau asserted during a Canadian Parliament debate that Canada’s national security officials had reason to suspect “agents of the Indian government” in Nijjar’s killing. However, India vehemently denied these allegations, dismissing them as “absurd” and “motivated.” They also pointed out that Canada had not provided any public evidence to support Trudeau’s claims.

India’s Concerns

India’s external affairs minister, S Jaishankar, expressed concerns over Canada’s approach to terrorism, extremism, and violence within its borders. He cited a long-standing issue of “permissiveness” in Canada regarding these matters. While Jaishankar noted that the situation shouldn’t be labeled a “deadlock,” he emphasized that the Indian government remained open to reviewing any specific and relevant information shared by Canada concerning the issue.

U.S. Involvement

The United States has also entered the fray, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken urging India to cooperate with Canada’s investigation into Nijjar’s death. Blinken raised this issue during a recent meeting with Jaishankar. State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller stated that the U.S. government has engaged with India on multiple occasions to encourage cooperation with Canada’s investigation. However, whether India has agreed to cooperate remains a question for New Delhi to answer.

As this diplomatic tussle unfolds, it underscores the complexities and sensitivities surrounding international relations, particularly when terrorism-related issues are involved. Both countries continue to navigate the situation with a focus on their respective national interests and diplomatic priorities.
