The Chinese military conducted exercises near Taiwan as a stern warning against perceived collaboration between pro-Taiwan groups and foreign nations. This action followed the visit of Taiwan’s vice president to the United States. China considers Taiwan its territory and opposes its international relations.
During these drills, ships and planes worked together, testing their ability to control air and sea areas and assess their combat effectiveness, stated Shi Yi, a spokesperson for China’s Eastern Theatre Command.
The exercises took place both north and southwest of Taiwan, intending to caution against actions by those supporting Taiwan’s independence and foreign involvement, Shi Yi added. Online footage displayed soldiers, military boats, and planes in operation.
China’s state media reported the involvement of missile-equipped boats and fighter jets, simulating an encirclement of Taiwan. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry revealed the detection of 45 Chinese military aircraft and nine vessels near the island, with some planes crossing the Taiwan Strait midline, entering the island’s air defense zone.
In response, Taiwan activated its aircraft, vessels, and land-based missiles, closely monitoring the situation, and strongly condemning China’s actions.
The historical split between Taiwan and China occurred in 1949 after a civil war. Although Taiwan self-governs, Beijing views it as a breakaway province, asserting its intention to reunify.
China’s military previously escalated exercises due to visits by foreign officials to Taiwan, disrupting trade routes and flight paths. These maneuvers aim to influence Taiwan’s election dynamics. In response, Taiwan calls for peace and self-determination.
