The Tale of Onam

In Hindu mythology, there once lived a generous and revered ruler in Kerala named King Mahabali. His reign brought prosperity and peace to the land, and his subjects adored him. The jealous deities, whom Mahabali had defeated to become the king, endeavored to put an end to his rule on Earth. They devised a plan and sent Lord Vishnu in the form of Vamana Avatar, a Brahmin, to test Mahabali.

Vamana approached Mahabali and humbly asked for just three feet of land. Mahabali, known for his generosity, agreed. Lord Vishnu, in a divine display, covered all the worlds in just two steps and then asked Mahabali for a place to put his third step. Mahabali, true to his nature, offered his head, and this act took him to the netherworld. Lord Vishnu, pleased by Mahabali’s devotion and generosity, blessed him with the ability to visit his beloved Kerala once a year.

Today, the people of Kerala celebrate Onam as the homecoming day of their adored King Mahabali.
