Arrests Made in Manipur Student Murder Case

In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested four individuals and detained two others in connection with the brutal murder of two students in Manipur back in July. The shocking incident came to light when disturbing photos of the victims surfaced on social media just last week.

Who’s in Custody?

Among those apprehended are two men and two women, while two girls have been detained in Imphal, the state capital. These suspects were located in the hill district of Churachandpur, approximately 51 kilometers from Imphal, where ethnic tensions had erupted on May 3.

Swift Response

A joint operation involving local police and the army led to the capture of the suspects in Churachandpur. After their apprehension, the authorities wasted no time, swiftly transporting them to the airport, where a waiting CBI team took charge. The group, along with the suspects, boarded the last flight out of Imphal at around 5:45 p.m.

Colonel Nectar Sanjenbam Takes Charge

The operation was conducted under the leadership of Colonel (retired) Nectar Sanjenbam, who was recently appointed as the Senior Superintendent (Combat) of Police. Notably, Colonel Sanjenbam is a former member of the elite 21 Para (Special Forces). Churachandpur, where the suspects were apprehended, is home to several Kuki insurgent groups that have signed agreements to suspend their operations.

Social Media Revelation

The case gained widespread attention when photos showing the two missing students, both 17 years old, surfaced on social media on September 26. The Manipur government pledged swift action in response to the disturbing images.

Ongoing Investigation

While the investigation into this tragic case has been ongoing, the bodies of the two minor students have yet to be recovered. Additionally, investigators are looking into allegations of sexual assault before the murder, according to sources close to the matter.

This arrest represents a significant step towards justice for the victims and their families, as authorities work tirelessly to piece together the events leading up to this horrific incident.
